Third grade is a transition year where my goal is to make my students self-sufficient and independent learners. Here are some highlights of what my students will learn.
Religion We study the Church and its beginnings from the birth of Jesus to his Ascension into heaven, how the early church developed, our Catholic church today, and how we can be an active member of our parish community. We will also review the seven sacraments and the parts of the Mass. In each lesson, we discuss how we can be a better follower of Jesus and how we are an integral part of the Kingdom of God. We learn the four marks of the Church: one, holy,Catholic, and Apostolic. We explore the meaning of what it means to be a member of the Catholic Church.
Spelling Each week we will cover a lesson in Spelling with an emphasis on the phonetic pattern. There is also a phonics page at the beginning of each of our reading stories. We have a weekly pre-test, final test, and a bonus word.
Cursive The third graders will learn how to write in cursive all of the lower and upper case letters. We have a cursive book to write in and gradually begin writing in cursive as the letters are mastered.
Reading We use theTreasures program which is also available online. It aligns with the Common Core Standards and each unit contains different genres. It focuses on vocabulary development, comprehension skills, and higher level thinking skills. We have two readers, a practice book, and supplementary materials. The students have vocabulary and comprehension tests. We also participate in many different reading activities to prepare for the ACT/ASPIRE.
Science We study Life Science, Earth Science, and Physical Science. We use the Foss Science program and follow the NGSS standards.
Social Studies We study communities, geography, and government.
English We study sentences, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs. We warm up each day with D.O.L.
Throughout the year we will compose a personal narrative, compare/contrast project, a persuasive letter, an expository writing project, and an adjective project. We try to develop better writing skills in all of our subjects. Emphasis will be placed on Standardized Testing/ACT ASPIRE.
Book Reports There will be one assigned for each trimester.
